Guest | January 12 In areas of higher than normal geothermal gradient (increase in temperature with depth), the oil window exists at shallower depths in younger sediments but is narrower. Maximum hydrocarbon generation occurs from depths of 2,000 to 2,900 metres (6,600 to 9,500 feet). The oil window refers to the depth at which the process of turning kerogen into oil can occur – from 6,000-7,000 ft. to 13,000-15,000 ft. At this point "source rock" (the original rock) will be "cracked" into oil. At greater depths you would not get oil from the cracking, but gas. At temperatures between 90 and 160 degrees Celsius, the kerogen turns into oil and natural gas. At any temperatures higher than 160, only natural gas or graphite is formed. This temperature range is known as the oil window. Oil will escape from the oil shale and rise toward the water above, creating a reservoir. At temps above 160 celsius, any remaining oil breaks down to form natural gas. At temps above 250, organic matter transforms into graphite. What is the oil window? The relatively narrow range of temperatures in which oil forms. The range of depths between 2000 and 5500 m is called the oil window. Only natural gas can be found below this window. Other important conditions for oil generation are pressure and time. Chemical reactions run faster at higher temperatures. At lower temperatures, or smaller depths, the oil may take millions of years to form.
