Spontaneous imbibition is of special importance to oil recovery from fractured reservoirs. Laboratory measurements of volume of liquid imbibed versus time are often used in the prediction of oil recovery. Imbibition measurements also provide a useful approach to the complex problem of characterizing the wetting properties of porous media.

Reservoir wettability is recognized to be a critical issue in many types of oil recovery processes. Recovery of oil by spontaneous imbibition of water into the matrix blocks of fractured reservoirs is a frequently cited example. Many methods of characterizing wettability have been proposed.

Matrix imbibition, which includes spontaneous imbibition (SI) and forced imbibition (FI), is the main mechanism of water-based methods, and can play a significant role in unlocking tight oil potentials as a tremendous amount of oil remains in the matrix following primary production. The changes (positive or negative) in the recovery rate and ultimate recovery compared to the brine imbibition were evaluated for the rock, surfactant and oil types. It was observed, for some rock samples, that the imbibition recovery by surfactant solution was strictly controlled by the concentration of the surfactant.
