This will soon be the mission of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which oversees the industry. The current mission says the board must "foster" oil and gas development, in addition to regulating it. The commission's statutory mandate, since 1951, has been to promote drilling. The Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) governs the permitting and regulation of oil and gas wells throughout the state. Adams County has limited authority when it comes to the oversight of oil and gas operations within unincorporated areas of the county.

Operators must file their chemical registry form within 60 days of completing a hydraulic fracturing treatment. Colorado oil and gas laws can be found in Title 34 of Colorado Revised Statutes.  Pursuant to C.R.S. 34-60-104, an oil and gas conservation commission is created in the department of natural resources of the state of Colorado. The Division of Oil and Public Safety (OPS) develops these regulations in order to execute the mandates that are found in the statutes. The Colorado Legislature writes these statutes which serve as the minimum requirements with which impacted owners and operators are bound to comply.
